Presto! Teacher Out Of A Job

The telephone call that spelled the end of Jim Piculas' career as a substitute teacher in Pasco County came on a January day about a week after he performed the disappearing-toothpick trick for a group of rapt middle school students.

Pat Sinclair, who oversees substitute teachers in the Pasco County School District, was on the phone. She told Piculas there had been a complaint about his performance at Rushe Middle School in Land O' Lakes.

He asked what she meant.

"She said, 'You've been accused of wizardry,'" Piculas said.

The article suggests that there may be more to it than the way he framed it. I would be leery of jumping to conclusions or too quickly believing one person's version of what was said.

Oh no! He taught the students sleight-of-hand tricks with props!

I know what the real problem is. The students will now burn in hell. They've been exposed to Satan's magic and now even God can't help them. I've been up against this level of religious fanaticism before.

I think you're off a bit. Highschool IS Hell. Entertaining them was his crime. The damned aren't supposed to be having a good time.

This was a ruse on the part of the fired teacher. He was canned not for the trick, but language, and not following the schools curriculem and putting a student in charge and not being able to maintain class order.
He apparently went to the news people who lept at the potential head line and didnt dig for information, but rather took him at his word.
