Re: [Portal. Meh.] - NEVERMIND

Ok, finished Portal, and I was a bit wrong. While I'm still unwilling to say 10/10, A+, five-stars, I found religion, etc - level 19 turned out to be a pleasant and unexpected surprise. Things improved noticeably when the simple exercises started becoming of use in a less "experimental" environment and the black humor went off the scale, albeit in a voice that I had to turn on the closed-captioning to understand half the time. The new scenery still became a tad repetetive again after about 15 minutes due to the activity in it remaining the same, but it certainly turned more clever. I'm hard-pressed to see the portal concept implemented in any new ways after that - maybe that's why the game was so short (but longer than I had thought). And, no, I only had the faintest inkling of what was coming. :)

Also keep in mind that all the hype started after the fact - originally the game pretty much just snuck out quietly as a little bonus tagged on to the Half-Life 2 box, by a bunch of peeps fresh out of college (or something to that effect).

Portal wasn't supposed to be anything special in the Orange Box, and it ended up getting more coverage than HL 2 Episode 2.

It was pretty good cake, wasn't it?

I remembered seeing a trailer for Portal some time ago, and thinking it'd be an interesting puzzle game. But, yeah, you're not really prepared for when the other shoe suddenly drops, and the last Testchamber is as long as the first eighteen! It was addictive. I planned to just pop it in for a bit the first time I got it, and ended up blowing all the way through it in my first sitting.

Yeah, I was prepared to just play the last four levels today. [info]xydexx ended up coming down and watching (and helping) me slog through the next four hours nonstop.

I thought up tons of ideas while I was playing the game. But anyway, I believe the cult following it developed has more to do with the writing than the portal weapon itself. My main disappointment with the game is that the portal weapon can't be used in multiplayer.

Assume the party escort submission position or you will miss the party.

I love how you think the game is over and then you find out you're only halfway through. And the end credits! I have the song on MP3. It's quite addictive. :-)
